I use the pucker gauge and don't wait for the wear bars. I ride hard with a goal of no chicken strips. If I pucker and think it's due to declining tire performance it gets changed.

hhhhhmmmm 8K on tires ? then I should really be happy with 20K on the last front Avon, and looking at 30/40k on the rear CT by Goodyear..
Got 10k most of the time on all the tires we have run.

Re: Should You Change Your Tires?

Nice. A bit scare-tacticish, but good info. Having been an engineer making snowmobile tracks, there is more to "dry rot" and cold tear than what he said. Also, running a tire to cords doesn't endanger you to air loss. You have at least 3/8" thickness left, albeit of 40 euro rubber. Typically 71 to 74 is the outer casing rubber.

That said, if you don't trust the tire, change it. Otherwise you'll be thinking of it and not riding.

Just a plug for those heading up this way: Sindt's in Dubuque will do what they can to get you back on the road ASAP. They carry some stock in tires and they're reasonably priced for a dealership. If you're going through Des Moines, I wholeheartedly recommend Fenders Cycles! They will mount a car tire if you bring one in. They also carry a supply of rubber. If you have a tire but need help mounting, give me a shout. I'm about an hour from the Cave and have spoons and a stand and a lift and... Same if you need some mechanical help. Evenings only, though, I gotta earn a living during the day. :-)
