                      Re: Hello from Alaska!

Last year my wife and I cruised from Chugiak down to Hope for a hamburger, then stopped by Portage Glacier and decided to go through the tunnel to Whittier. We toured the town, which took all of ten minutes, had a leisurely dinner, and cruised back home around nine PM in full daylight.

Coming out the Portage side of the tunnel a large bull-moose was licking salty bilge water off of the roadway, right in the middle of our lane of travel. Loud pipes worked to our advantage as the horn didn't budge him. After revving the engine he got spooked and moved off the roadway. That was important since the drive is made on a strip of pavement between two railroad tracks, you kind of have to stay in that lane or chance getting a front tire down in the track channel - that's part of the safety orientation you have to take before they'll let you ride a motorcycle through the tunnel.

                      It was a great trip!

Anyone interested in the Whittier Tunnel ride, here is a piece with some good pictures of the tunnel. This is not my site, but it is certainly what it is like.
