  • New Rider

    Hey all,

New rider here with a new (to me) '06 Vulcan 500 in Western MA. Loving it so far, but it's getting cold now, planning to ride until the snow flies.

Hope to see some of you on the road.

        Re: New Rider

        Welcome.
You might want to curb your riding just before the snow flies. <J/K>

Slick spots can develop where you don't expect them any time the temp goes below about 40 F. Painted lines on the road are a good example. Some become VERY slick when cold and a little damp.

            Re: New Rider

Welcome. I know western Mass is very scenic with curves and hills. How well are the roads maintained these days?
As a new rider, let me recommend some reading to you to help you become aware of and keep aware of the hazards we face everyday while riding.

David Hough has a series of books titled "proficient motorcycling ". He also has a great book that is a compilation of short reads on the hazards we face daily called "street strategies". You might even find them in you local library, but they are worth owning and rereading to keep the lessons fresh in your mind.

                Re: New Rider

Thanks for the welcome everybody, and I will definitely take that advice.

It is indeed very scenic out here and depending on where you go, the roads are very well maintained. I will have to be careful because I'm getting a new rear tire, and I hear they are a little slicker before they are broken in.

Welcome from the mountain state of West Virginia. We also have an abundance of twisty mountain roads, but they like to have a few imperfect ones just to keep us on our toes LOL!!
