NYPD Sued For Pepper-Spraying 5-Month-Old Baby

The New York Police Department (NYPD) is being sued by a woman who claims officers pepper-sprayed her entire family, including a 5-month-old baby and a 2-year-old child.

Marilyn Taylor said officers stopped her and her husband in the subway on Aug. 9, accusing them of not paying the fare. According to the lawsuit obtained by Courthouse News Service, Taylor claims NYPD Officers Maripily Clase, Suranjit Dey and Jermaine Hodge then overreacted to her pushing her 2-year-old through a service door, rather than using the turnstile, on her way to a Manhattan-bound L train.

At the time, Taylor was pushing her 2-year-old in a stroller and holding her 4-year-old’s hand. Her husband carried their 5-month-old close to his chest. When questioned by police, the suit claims, "the aggressiveness of the officers' demeanors had upset the four-year-old daughter, and her mother bent down to console her and tell her, 'everything will be OK.’”

That’s when Officer Dey allegedly pepper-sprayed Taylor, who nearly fell from the platform. The spray affected the entire family.

“The pepper-spray caused the children to scream out and choked the two-year old, who went into fits of vomiting,” reads the lawsuit. “Ms. Taylor was then placed in handcuffs as the minor children cried in fear and pain.”

The complaint also states that the officers handcuffed Taylor and pushed her so hard down the stairs that it bruised her wrists and back.

After Taylor's arrest, her husband, Dehaven McClain, took all three children home himself. The family sought medical attention because of the incident.

“After the attack, mother and father suffered ongoing eye injuries and all three children suffer emotional harms, and are now afraid to ride the subways and become afraid when they see police officers,” the lawsuit states.

“The four year-old cried herself to sleep for weeks, and after the incident the two-year-old began waking up in the night crying for her mother.”

In court the following day, Taylor was given an adjournment in contemplation of a dismissal, which would remove all charges if she stayed out of trouble for a certain amount time.

The suit seeks punitive damages for civil rights violations, negligence, assault, battery, and violations of state and federal constitutions.

Buttocks baring woman jailed after papaya attack in Vero Beach

Vero Beach police were called March 10 to a disturbance in the 1200 block of 24th Street. Officers were met by Suzanne Evlarina Wasden, whose pants were partially down and whose derriere was partially exposed.

Wasden, 49, said an ex-boyfriend came to her home "looking for birthday sex," the affidavit states. Wasden was described as "very intoxicated."

Meanwhile, a 16-year-old boy who lives next to Wasden said Wasden came to his trailer seeking a cigarette and beer. Wasden began screaming and yelling, the affidavit states.

The teen told police the ex-boyfriend tried to calm Wasden, but that she attacked the ex-boyfriend. She pushed him into glass, cutting his arm, and started throwing papayas at them.

The teen said Wasden turned around and lowered her jeans below her hindquarters and said, "Kiss my butt." The teen said he could see "everything and 'that was something that none of us wanted to see," the affidavit states.

The teen, the ex-boyfriend and two others saw the "exposure."
Informally known as "mooning," exposing one's buttocks is a practice often intended as a sign of defiance or disrespect.

Records didn't state whether the ex-boyfriend received "birthday sex" from Wasden.

Records did indicate the ex-boyfriend's 58th birthday was shortly before the papaya throwing/buttocks baring brouhaha.

Wasden, of the 1200 block of 24th Street in Vero Beach, was arrested on a disorderly intoxication charge.

Hampton Waffle House employee charged for April Fool’s joke

Hampton, Va. – A Hampton Waffle House employee is now charged after officers say she played an April Fool’s joke on them.
Susan Tinker is charged for lying about a robbery.
Police say around 6 a.m. Monday morning, Tinker called to report the robbery at the restaurant on West Mercury Boulevard.
Police say they got to the scene and spent more than an hour investigating.
While waiting for the manger to get there to review surveillance tape, they figured out there was no robbery.
Tinker told police it was all an April Fool’s joke.
But officers say this was no laughing matter.
A spokesperson for the Waffle House says they do not tolerate this kind of behavior and Tinker is no longer employed there.

‘Double texter’ caught driving a car with his knees

Police in Mobile, Ala. pulled Moore over and spotted him double texting behind the wheel.
It’s an impressive skill, this texting business, and no one can do it quite like our Gen-Y demographic. So it’s no surprise that at the spry young age of 19, Dandre Moore hits all the requisite marks for hyper-dexterity.
The Mississippi resident has been “double texting” since he was 15. In Gen-X and above language, this means texting with both hands on two different phones at the same time.
While there’s nothing wrong per se with this communication method, there is a time and place for double texting. Driving a car with a three-year-old in the backseat and three additional passengers in the vehicle is not one of those times.
As NBC News notes, police in Mobile, Ala. pulled Moore over and spotted him double texting behind the wheel. In absence of any hands with which to steer the moving vehicle, the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office said Moore had commandeered the wheel with his knees.
After they pulled him over, police searched the car. That’s when a sheriff’s office spokesperson told the Press Register that they also found Xanax and a bottle full of oxycodone, a prescription painkiller. Well, not exactly full. The bottle, which had been filled the week before with 720 pills, had just over half that amount remaining, the spokesperson added.
Moore’s older brother, Dartavious Moore, allegedly had an ounce of marijuana tucked away in his skivvies.
Both brothers were charged with possession: Dartavious for marijuana and Dandre for illegal possession of Xanax and possession of a controlled substance.
And if there were ever a time to dust off the old “Kids, don’t try this at home… or in a moving vehicle” phrase this would be it.

Fight Over Woman Ends in Death After Man Shoves a Foot Up His Friend’s Ass

A Russian man was arrested late last month and charged with homicide after killing his friend by shoving a foot up his ass. Literally.

According to local reports, Vladimir Krasnov, 28, of Nizhny Novgorod had decided to make good on the oft-heard threat following a drunken fight with his 48-year-old friend Sergei over Krasnov's girlfriend Yelena.

Police say Krasnov waited until his friend passed out, and then proceeded to insert his right foot "into the victim's anus and rectum."

Sergei suffered severe internal bleeding as a result, and eventually died at the scene.

Krasnov was subsequently arrested, and now faces up to 15 years behind bars.

"All I can say [is] I really regret [it]," Krasnov told officials. "Nothing like this would happen if I were sober."

His girlfriend Yelena concurred. "It's just alcohol," she told a reporter, adding that Krasnov had nothing to be jealous about.

"With [Sergei] it was just 'hello' and 'goodbye'," she said.

                Weird Crime: (Un)Safety Dance

Sometime before 8:00 AM on April 3, 2013, 34-year-old Felix Lockett crashed his vehicle into the barrier wall outside an apartment complex. When police were called to the scene of the accident, however, the car wreck itself became the least of their worries.

The weirdness began with Lockett, who had sustained very serious injuries, somehow still being able to strip completely naked and dance in the middle of the street.

According to a nearby woman who observed the impromptu nude jam session, Lockett had the music on his car stereo blaring and was "whamming on his car...like he was beating to the sound of the music."

But unfortunately for the police on the scene, Lockett's strange behavior was not the most bizarre or dangerous thing that they would encounter. When one of the officers opened up Lockett's car door, he was overcome by a strong chemical odor that instantly made his eyes water and gave him severe difficulty breathing.

It turned out that Lockett was mixing marijuana with formaldehyde (yes, the stuff used to embalm dead people) to create a potent brain zapper known on the streets as 'Love Boat.'

It's worth pointing out that when your life has reached a point that you're using embalming fluid to help you get high at 8:00 in the morning while driving in your car, some serious redirection of your priorities and decision making skills needs to take place.

But back to the incident: Two more police officers were also exposed to the overwhelming chemical smell, causing all three to require medical attention. A hazmat unit was eventually called in to help remove the toxic materials from the car while Lockett himself was finally convinced to stop dancing so he could be taken to a nearby hospital.

At this time, Felix Lockett is facing one charge of driving under the influence, although there will likely be more to come once he is released from the hospital. The mugshot below is from an arrest in 2010 when he was caught driving without a license.

His 2013 mugshot, however, will be remembered as the time he was
caught driving without a brain in his head, but a song still in his heart.

2 UK men convicted in plot to kill Joss Stone

LONDON—A British jury convicted two men on Wednesday of plotting to rob and kill soul singer Joss Stone.
Junior Bradshaw, 32, and Kevin Liverpool, 35, were found guilty at Exeter Crown Court on charges of conspiracy to murder, to cause grievous bodily harm and to rob. They had denied the charges.

Liverpool was given a life sentence and ordered to serve a minimum of 10 years and eight months. Bradshaw will be sentenced at a later date.

"You intended to rob her and kill her and dump her body in the river, according to your words, and then leave the country with your accomplice Junior Bradshaw," said Judge Francis Gilbert in sentencing Liverpool.

After the verdict, Grammy award-winner Stone expressed gratitude for support and kind wishes during the ordeal.

"I am relieved the trial is now over and that these men are no longer in a position to cause harm to anyone," she said in a statement.

Bradshaw and Liverpool were arrested in June 2011 close to Stone's home in southwestern England after suspicious neighbors reported them to the police. They never reached her house.

Prosecutors said the pair set off from their home in Manchester to Stone's home in Devon armed with a samurai sword, knives, a hammer, black bags and gloves.

They were involved in a crash on their journey, and at one point got lost, asking a postman for directions to Stone's home.

Handwritten notes found in their car made reference to "decapitate."

Another read "Jocelyn RIP" and a further note said: "Once Jocelyn's dead ... find a river to dump her," according to prosecutors.
Other notes indicated that the pair disapproved of Stone's being invited to Prince William and Kate Middleton's wedding.

Teacher punched teen during road rage incident, deputies say

ALOHA, Ore. — A Washington County sheriff's spokesman said a high school teacher was arrested after a road rage incident that left a teenage driver with a bleeding lip and swollen eye.

Sgt. Dave Thompson said 17-year-old Alexander Hoang told deputies he was driving at the 25 mph speed limit Thursday in a residential area of Aloha, when another driver began tailgating him.

"He was following really closely. I was like 'okay I got a tailgater on me,'" Hoang said. "When I stepped on my brake to slow down to 20 in the school zone, he was really, really angry. I could see him weaving behind me."

The other driver passed Hoang, swerved into him and stopped in front of him.

According to Hoang and other witnesses, the other driver approached on foot, forced open his car door and started hitting him in the face.

"Before I could talk, he landed a couple of punches on my face," Hoang said.

After the attack, Thompson said the man drove home. Witnesses followed him and turned him in.

Bruce Clevenger, 62, was arrested for investigation of hit and run, reckless driving, fourth-degree assault and harassment. He was released on his own recognizance.

Clevenger was placed on paid administrative leave from his job as a special education teacher at Hillsboro's Liberty High School, a district spokesperson said. The district is investigating the incident.

"I was really surprised when I heard he was a teacher," said Hoang. "Teachers are supposed to be good examples for everybody."

Mugshot: Man pawned wedding ring for prostitute?

Police say a South Carolina man allegedly pawned his wedding ring for $20 in order to spend time with a woman believed to be a prostitute.

Marvin Holmes, 33, and Rhonda Kelley, 41, were arrested Friday after police stopped his car in an area of Greenwood known for drug activity and prostitution, WHNS reported.

According to police, Holmes admitted picking up Kelley at a Pavan Food Store and taking her to a pawn shop, where he pawned his 10-karat wedding ring for $20. Police said Holmes told officers he was having problems with his wife and thought Kelley was a prostitute.

Police searched the vehicle and allegedly found marijuana and a crack pipe inside, according to WHNS. Kelley reportedly denied accepting money for sex from Holmes.

Holmes was charged with solicitation of prostitution. Kelley was charged with solicitation of prostitution and possession of marijuana.

                            10 Very Costly Typos

Typos can be embarrassing. They can also be costly. And not just for those individuals whose jobs depend on knowing the difference between “it’s” and “its” or where a comma is most appropriate. Last weekend, bauble-loving Texans got the deal of a lifetime when a misprint in a Macy’s mailer advertised a $1500 necklace for just $47. (It should have read $497.) It didn’t take long for the entire inventory to be zapped, at a loss of $450 a pop to the retail giant. (Not to mention plenty of faces as red as the star in the company’s logo.)

Google, on the other hand, loves a good typing transposition. Not only is the mega-search engine’s own name a happy accident (it was supposed to be Googol; the domain name was incorrectly registered), but Harvard University researchers claim that the company earns about $497 million each year from everyday people mistyping the names of popular websites and landing on “typosquatter” sites… which just happen to be littered with Google ads. (Ka-ching!)

Here are 10 other costly typos that give the phrase “economy of words” new meaning.

                            1. NASA’S MISSING HYPHEN

                            The damage: $80 million

Hyphens don’t usually score high on the list of most important punctuation. But a single dash led to absolute failure for NASA in 1962 in the case of Mariner 1, America’s first interplanetary probe. The mission was simple: get up close and personal with close neighbor Venus. But a single missing hyphen in the coding used to set trajectory and speed caused the craft to explode just minutes after takeoff. 2001: A Space Odyssey novelist Arthur C. Clarke called it “the most expensive hyphen in history.”

                            2. THE CASE OF THE ANTIQUE ALE

                            The damage: $502,996

A missing ‘P’ cost one sloppy (and we’d have to surmise ill-informed) eBay seller more than half-a-mill on the 150-year-old beer he was auctioning. Few collectors knew a bottle of Allsopp’s Arctic Ale was up for bid, because it was listed as a bottle of Allsop’s Arctic Ale. One eagle-eyed bidder hit a payday of Antiques Roadshow proportions when he came across the rare booze, purchased it for $304, then immediately re-sold it for $503,300.

                            3. THE BIBLE PROMOTES PROMISCUITY

The damage: $4590 (and eternal damnation)

Not even the heavenly father is immune to occasional inattention to detail. In 1631, London’s Baker Book House rewrote the 10 Commandments when a missing word in the seventh directive declared, “Thou shalt commit adultery.” Parliament was not singing hallelujah; they declared that all erroneous copies of the Good Book—which came to be known as “The Wicked Bible”—be destroyed and fined the London publisher 3000 pounds.

                            4. PASTA GETS RACIST

                            The damage: $20,000

A plate of tagliatelle with sardines and prosciutto would typically only be offensive to a vegetarian’s senses. But an unfortunate blunder in The Pasta Bible, published by Penguin Australia in 2010, recommended seasoning the dish with “salt and freshly ground black people.” Though no recall was made of the books already in circulation, the printer quickly destroyed all 7000 remaining copies in its inventory.

                            5. JUAN PABLO DAVILA BUYS HIGH, SELLS LOW

                            The damage: $175 million

Online trading was still in its relative infancy in 1994, a fact Juan Pablo Davila will never forget. It all started when the former copper trader—who was employed by Chile’s government-owned company Codelco—mistakenly bought stock he was trying to sell. After realizing the error, he went on a bit of a trading rampage—buying and selling enough stock that, by day’s end, he had cost the company/country $175 million. Davila was, of course, fired. And Codelco ended up filing suit against Merrill Lynch, alleging that the brokerage allowed Davila to make unauthorized trades. Merrill coughed up $25 million to settle the dispute—but not before a new word entered the popular lexicon: davilar, a verb used to indicate a screw-up of epic magnitude.

                            6. MIZUHO SECURITIES SELLS LOW—LIKE, REALLY LOW

                            The damage: $340 million

In December 2005, Japan’s Mizuho Securities introduced a new member to its portfolio of offerings, a recruitment company called J-Com Co., nicely priced at 610,000 yen per share. Less than a year later, one of the company’s traders made more than a simple boo-boo when he sold 610,000 shares at one yen apiece. No amount of pleading to the Tokyo Stock Exchange could reverse the error.

                            7. CAR DEALERSHIP PULLS A MICHAEL SCOTT

The damage: $50 million (or $250,000 in Walmart dollars)

And you thought alien sightings were the only interesting thing happening in Roswell, New Mexico! In 2007, a local car dealership came up with a brilliant plan to stimulate sluggish sales: mail out 50,000 scratch tickets, one of which would reveal a $1000 cash prize. But Atlanta-based Force Events Direct Marketing Company mistakenly upped the ante when they printed said scratch tickets, making every one of them a grand-prize winner, for a grand payout of $50 million. Unable to honor the debt, the dealership instead offered a $5 Walmart gift certificate for every winning ticket.

                            8. NYC DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION’S LESSON IN BOOKKEEPING

                            The damage: $1.4 million

Humans and computers don’t always play well together. In 2006, New York City comptroller William Thompson admitted that a typo—an extra letter, to be precise—caused its accounting software to misinterpret a document, leading the city’s Department of Education to double its transportation spending (shelling out $2.8 million instead of $1.4 million).

                            9. NYC MTA’S LESSON IN PROOFREADING

                            The damage: $500,000

Not to be outdone, just last month, New York City’s Transportation Authority had to recall 160,000 maps and posters that announced the recent hike for the minimum amount put on pay-per-ride cards from $4.50 to $5.00. The problem? A typographical error that listed the “new” price as $4.50. Oops! Of course, it will only take 100,000 rides on the 6 train to make up the difference. So straphangers lose (yet again).

                            10. AN EXOTIC VACATION BECOMES X-RATED

The damage: $10 million (plus $230 per month)

Remember the Yellow Pages? Yeah, well Banner Travel Services would like to forget them. Years ago, the now-shuttered Sonoma, California-based travel agency decided to market its services in the phone book ... only to find that the final printing advertised its specialization in exotic destinations as a forte in “erotic” destinations. The typo certainly piqued the interest of some new customers, just not the kind of clientele the company was hoping to attract. The printer offered to waive its $230 monthly listing fee, but Banner sued for $10 million anyway.
